Last spring I shared with you a letter from the "As Jane Ford Sees It..." advice column written by a nine year-old reader. The above letter was featured in the "Ann Martin Counselor-at-Love" column in Secret Hearts #115 (October 1966) and speaks to a similar matter -- demographics of romance comic book readers. Our career girl, "Debra" at 28 years is quite a bit older than what one would normally think of as a romance comic book reader. But there she is anyhow, asking a question of Ann Martin as to whether she should settle or continue the hunt! I think we can definitively say that readers of the 1960s and '70s romance comics were at least between the ages of 9 and 28, with certainly some variance on either end. Quite a range really, and a little surprising too!

Selling Romance - Pursettes Tampon Ads

Anyone who has flipped through a romance comic knows that they hold a few strange ads, considering the primarily female demographic. Take for example, the ubiquitous fishing equipment advertisement that can be found in many '60s/'70s comics, including the romance books. Trolling lures and trout flies just aren't things you would typically associate with a young female audience! But tampons? Now that definitely makes more sense! The following are advertisements for Pursettes brand tampons ("the tote tampons") that ran in romance comics as well as teen magazines such as Seventeen from the late 1960s into the the '70s.

Women of the Romance Comics - Interview with Liz Berube!

It's been a while since I have done an interview here at Sequential Crush! You may remember the ones I did with Irene Vartanoff and Suzan Loeb -- two great women who worked on the romance comics. Well today, I have for you the story of another fascinating woman in the industry -- Liz Berube or “Elizabeth” as you may recognize from her signature on the romance pages.

This interview has been in the works for almost two years now. Liz has had some health issues and luckily, is starting to feel better. I conducted this interview via email. Liz sent lots of additional information in other emails which I have incorporated to give more details on the pieces of artwork and photos. Please enjoy!

Do you prefer “Liz” or “Elizabeth” as you signed the romance pages?

When working with the syndicated comic strip ("Karen") I preferred to use my full maiden name: Elizabeth Ann Safian. Also, when working on children's books, cards and commissioned work. When I began coloring for Neal Adams, at Continuity the letterer put in Liz Berube and it stayed that way. As it was a married name, I really wanted to drop "Berube" but, by that time the whole industry was using it - and I had doubts about a change. After all these years, I'm rapidly getting to a point where I'm not as concerned .... and hope to go back to the original "Safian." I always preferred "Liz" but my family calls me "Beth" and when I'm first introduced to people I use the formal "Elizabeth " and leave it up to whatever they're comfortable with.

Did you have formal artistic training prior to entering the industry? How did you get your start in the comic book industry?

I began sketching on the walls of my parent's home when I was about 3. Over the years, I found myself carrying a sketchbook everywhere. Since I used to take the bus and train into Manhattan from Queens I had 3 hours a day to sketch. Growing up, I made a lot of little books for friends and relatives. My favorite gift is an old fashioned "flip" card which I can send as is (the way my
nephews like it) or transfer it into iMovie and put it on disc.

I attended The School of Visual Arts, in New York City, majoring in Cartooning. On the day I left the school, I passed the bulletin board and saw an ad for work at Archie Comics. They were not interested in my art as they had more than enough artists who could draw Archie and pals... so, Richard Goldwater offered me a job as co-editor with Victor Gorelick and colorist. I started work that day. Vic was great to work with and taught me everything there was to know about producing an Archie Comic. That's when they were down on Church St (Wall St. area) and a hop, skip and a jump to lunches in Chinatown. The one drawback was the old, tarred streets which would turn to glue in the summer heat. I can't even begin to remember how many 5" heels I left in the streets of NY.

Before Visual Arts ( I had graduated high school at 16 ) I was offered a scholarship at Cooper Union with the proviso that I would become a teacher, after the schooling was completed. Without the proper guidance and still basically a child my priorities were slightly skewed. The thought of becoming a teacher provided no thrill and I turned it down. Later on, I was to learn that it was probably the most prestigious school around and my decision was a very, very foolish one. So - I did it the hard way, and learned "by the seat of my pants."

I used to draw the comic strip for the High School Newspaper and I'm told that they've continued it, after all these years with different artists. Very gratifying.

This is the only schooling that could be considered "formal." However - this was the ‘60s, and we spent more time drinking coffee, sketching each other, wearing black everything and becoming "Beatniks." Of course, we also took a lot of unscheduled field trips to Greenwich Village or the museums. One VERY fun-filled day we skipped to the tune of "We're Off To See the Wizard" from the Village - all the way up to Temple Emmanuel. Then we just sat on Fifth and sketched.

It was a grand time but a lot of us missed out on the very complete foundation courses. The great thing about SVA was that they taught EVERYTHING from life drawing to sculpture... even advertising.

Were you in the Bullpen at DC or did you work freelance?

Even when I was in between art jobs and usually working as an executive secretary, I hated punching a time clock. I've always disliked restrictions. Freelance - definitely. Before DC discontinued the Romance line, I was offered the job of Editor, and one of the big reasons I turned it down was that I preferred to work at home. I was a single working mother and, at 24, likely the most ignorant of the bunch when it came to "what was good for me." I didn't want to leave my son in daycare... never dreaming that I could have hired someone to be at the office with me, to take care of him - on an Editor's salary.

Who was your boss? Your coworkers? Do you remember any other women working on the romance comics along with you? Any fun stories?

My "bosses " depended upon which editor was dealing with which magazine. I've worked with all the old crew, at one time or other. During the Romance years, I worked mostly with Joe Orlando and Dick Giordano who were covering those comics, among others. The person I dealt with most was Jack Adler, who passed away not too long ago. Jack was a good friend and a terrifically talented man. He taught me everything I knew about coloring and some "tricks of the trade,” which made it possible for me to pull all nighters and get the work in, on time. Although he headed the Production Dept., he made many innovations most people never even knew about. I could write a whole separate book - just about Jack Adler. No matter how far I strayed to other forms of illustration, he always found a place for me. A fine man. A very gracious and loyal man. Not to mention funny. In the ‘80s I worked with Sal Almendola. A great guy... and a lot of fun to work with.

At the time, I was the only female artist working for DC. Tatiana Wood colored comics, as I did... wonderful woman and a fantastic colorist. There were a few secretaries but I have to say that most of us were there for THE JOB and the more we did, the more we were paid... so, with the exception of a few lunches - I was there to work. I turned in my pages, picked up more work, and left. If I got lucky, time-wise I could be home by late afternoon, spend time with my son and then go to work when he went to sleep. By the next morning, I could return to the office and pick up more. If there had been FEDex, in those days I probably never would have left the house. I was the only female artist/colorist and although I had some fun kidding with the guys and an occasional visit to Mad Magazine ("and the gang of usual idiots")... socializing was a limited pastime. As he got older - I took him with me and the end of our "day at the office " always ended with a trip to FAO SCHWARZ ...... the best toy store in the world.

How would you describe the illustration style you used for the romance pages? What was your inspiration for your drawings? Were they completely from your imagination or did you use models, catalogs, etc.?

I don't know what you would call my "style"... it flowed. Graceful, sensual and fun. What can I say? It's what came out, when I put pencil to paper. My mom was artistic, in many ways and some of her style (the hair) rubbed off. I was a big fan of Art Deco and Art Nouveau... Alphonse Mucha. I imagine that rubbed off, as well - as there is nothing really new, under the sun and consciously or subconsciously - we all "borrow" from each other. Art, Music, Cinema... the works. Mostly I was concerned with something looking beautiful. My first husband said I could find
beauty in a sewer... I certainly tried.

I couldn't afford models. Mostly, I used Vogue magazine. Vogue had THE most wonderful photographers of several decades and the styles could be adapted to youth. Vogue was probably
one of the first magazines to use youthful models and interesting photographers. Like Carrie Bradshaw, in "Sex and the City" - I had Vogues all over my apartment. Still do. Only now... I use others... even catalogs. Catalogs weren't around in the ‘60s. Some of my ideas came from Cosmopolitan which, at the time, was a new concept. Their first issue sported a nude centerfold of Burt Reynolds and their fashion and articles were very much into the "new" MOD look.

I would have to say that most of the pages I did came from my imagination and then I would find models to suit my needs.

How long did it take you to draw per page? Many of them were so intricate!

The amount of time spent on a page varied widely. The most time was spent on the ideas and sketches... then came the complete pencils and finally, the inking and the coloring. Colors were all done with brush and most of the inking. Some days (depending upon content ) it would take all day and half the night... and sometimes I could turn out several pages per day.

What was your involvement with the conceptualization of the pages you drew? Did you write the text as well?

Sometimes I wrote the text and generally, my involvement with the concept was complete. (I didn't always do my own lettering ).

Do you know approximately how many romance stories/featurettes you did?

I have no idea how many pages I completed for DC. Neal Adams created a union, so the artists would get all their original art work back, once printed. I'm sad to say that so many of mine "walked off" - I can't begin to guess at the total. It's too bad, because there are many that never turned up which I would have liked to frame. The fact that there are people out there – selling my art, without my permission is a crime and a shame.

You were quite young when you were drawing the romance comics – do you feel that your position as a young woman helped you relate to the audience you were drawing for?

Yes... I think being in my late teens and early twenties made a tremendous difference. The only time it got in the way, was when someone from "the old boys club" thought they could bribe me with work, to get me on the old Hollywood "casting couch." This did NOT happen at DC but, I would say that being who I was at that time - was both a blessing and a curse.

I had some terrific ideas that could have helped the Romance line continue but there were "politics" involved and getting someone to listen was difficult. There were also a lot of jealousies floating around - surprisingly, among some of the younger men who thought they knew more about what young girls wanted. I thought the Romance line should be more on the Cosmopolitan, MOD, Twiggy, British Invasion line and less like an old Jane Wyman/Rock Hudson movie. It was like comparing Cameron Diaz with Joan Crawford. Now - had I taken the Editor's job... maybe things would have been different. Unfortunately... I didn't, and they're not.

Can you think of any piece or pieces that you drew, that you are particularly fond of?

My favorite of all time were the "Contents" page and "Your Horoscope" - this was my very favorite. In spite of the efforts of ACBA (Neal Adams union) and Dick Giordano - the editor - and a good friend, it "walked away" and I never got the original. My career as an artist with DC started with this (Joe Orlando's idea) and, although I did my job - I never put my heart into a drawing, after it was stolen (along with others). I think it was Young Romance. Hard to tell, after all these years... but there's a little # on the bottom or the side. J-000 was Joe Orlando. G-000 was Dick Giordano. Princes, both.

Did you work for any other comic book companies?

I also worked on exclusive contract coloring for Neal Adams (Continuity Graphics ). These were done with airbrush. Neal and his wife, Corey, taught me even more about coloring. Corey is amazing. And what can I say about Neal? Only Neal could turn a schlep in his pajamas into The Dark Knight. He's one of the best artists I've ever known. In the ‘80s I also did some coloring for TSR, out of Los Angeles. They're gone now... At least I got all my work back from them.

Do you ever attend conventions?

I would love to attend conventions and was supposed to be guest speaker in Minnesota two years ago, but the horse threw me again... and changed plans. I'm hoping to be there, this Spring.

What current projects are you working on?

At this point in time, I still do freelance work on commission - although I'm considered to be retired. I don't think an artist ever retires... slows down a little... but never a full cold stop.

I've kept busy with commissions, children's books (illustrating) and gifts for friends and family. Life has thrown a few curves... rather than bore my fans - I just say "I fell off a horse" ... it keeps the questions and answers simple but, as I've said before, that's a horse of a different color (grin).

As for now, I'm playing with Photoshop and my camera and doing little sketches here and there. I'm always open to work in the style that made me interesting... although what I do now is definitely more color (airbrush) and interested in anything that anyone is interested in buying. Even if I manage to corral the latest horse - I don't usually do deadlines.

Imagine receiving the gift of romance comics!!! I know... it seems strange that a comic book with a cover date of April would have a Santa inspired ad, but most comics were actually published two months before the date on the cover. In the case of this issue and going by that lag time, this ad is still a little out of place! I guess those gifts of romance comics would have been a little late for the holidays!

Because You Demanded It! My Mother, the Mantrap!

Thanks to everyone who weighed in on which pink cover they liked best! Today I have for you the winner -- "My Mother, the Mantrap" from Falling in Love #131 (April 1972). I believe the pencils on this one are by Mike Sekowsky, though the cover art comes from the hands of Win Mortimer and Vince Colletta. Enjoy!

The awesomely titled, "My Mother, the Mantrap" introduces us to Sheila, her beautiful 36 year old mother, and her mother's suitor -- Dr. Elliot Marsh. Sheila is devastated after overhearing her mother refuse Elliot's marriage proposal. Why you ask? Sheila can't stand to have her mother continue to attempt to live her life rather than her own!

Sheila lashes out at her mom while she helps her daughter prepare for a party. Sheila sees her enthusiastic and fun mother as a man stealer, which puts her young adult self constantly on edge.

At the party, the boy Sheila likes runs off to dance with mother dearest. To add insult to injury, he thinks Sheila's mom is her sister. Ouch!

That night while in bed, Sheila cries herself to sleep. Her mother overhears her, but she cannot console Sheila who is hell-bent on keeping all prospective beaus away from her.

A short time later, Sheila is set up on a blind date with a guy named Neil Sawyer. They spend all their free time together and fall in love. Ultimately, Neil proposes.

Sheila manages to keep her mother out of the picture until Neil inquires as to why she hasn't let him meet her. Sheila finally tells her mom who is delighted and anxious to meet Neil... perhaps to steal him?

Having had enough of her mother, Sheila flips out and yells, "hands off, mother!" Sheila then announces her plans to move out. Her mother begs her not to, and retorts with the fact she never realized Sheila resented her so. Neil is supportive with Sheila's decision to get her own apartment. But when Sheila finally moves out, Neil can tell that all she can think about is her mom.

After moving, the betrothed go and visit Dr. Elliot Marsh for their premarital blood test and to inquire if he will act as a witness to their marriage. Elliot agrees and says he is anxious to see Sheila's mother. Sheila reveals that her mother will not be there -- they didn't invite her! Elliot and Sheila then get into it. Sheila tells him how her mother was constantly trying to ruin her life, while Elliot contends that her mom was just trying to ensure Sheila's happiness by making sure she was never alone like she had been while growing up.

Feeling terrible about how she treated her well-meaning mother, Sheila goes with Neil to apologize. Her mother's love is unfailing, and all is forgiven. I guess she wasn't trying to steal Sheila's boyfriends after all!

Quite the plot, eh?! What did you think? Was her mother as sinister as Sheila made her out to be? I happen to like this one because it focuses on the mother/daughter relationship and demonstrates how family is often inextricably linked to romantic attachments -- whether one likes it or not!

Joe Simon 1913 - 2011

I had another post prepped for today, but I am sad to say that I just heard the news that romance comic book genre pioneer, Joe Simon has passed away. As the founding father of romance comics (along with Jack Kirby) I just want to take this time to both remember him and thank him. I can't really imagine what the comic book industry or my life would be like without his monumental contributions. Rest in peace, Mr. Simon.

Long Running Romance Comic Book Serial "Reach for Happiness!"- Episode Five

I recently realized that it has been quite a while since I last posted an episode of the long-running, Peyton Place based romance comic serial, "Reach for Happiness!" Oops!

Today I shall correct that with the fifth installment from Secret Hearts #114 (September 1966). Since many of you are new readers, I encourage you to catch up with the first four episodes here! You can also read the handy "What Came Before..." page right below to get up to speed on all the drama and anguish!

The art for all previous episodes was moodily executed by Gene Colan. In this episode, you will notice that the art duties are shared between Colan and another artist. The Grand Comics Database credits John Rosenberger as the second artist.

After being dropped off at her house by Greg close to dawn, Karen is confused to say the least. Just as quickly as Greg turned on the charm, he turned it off and left her hanging. Needing to talk to someone about the kiss, Karen notices that her sister Peggy is still awake. But Peggy is worried about her own problems (which are unknown to us at this point) and isn't receptive in the least to Karen's woes.

The next day, Rita (Karen's competition for Greg) visits her father at his hardware store. Rita lets her dad know that she is planning on giving Greg an ultimatum that very day.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the tracks, Roger and Lila Smathers continue to fight about their son Richie and his spoiled ways. Richie does little to show remorse for the accident he caused.

After being spurned by her sister, Karen goes to Lila looking for a sympathetic ear. But Lila isn't much help either, and grills Karen on why she gave up Greg in the first place for movie star Frankie Summers (now deceased). When Karen tells Lila about Rita, Lila advises her to take action... and quick, if she doesn't want to lose Greg.
Karen walks home and tries to avoid dropping in at Greg's office. Naturally, she can't help herself and stops in. She tells Greg that she had a wonderful time the night prior. An awkward silence grows between them and she motions to leave. Greg stops her and declares, "Karen -- I'm so sorry --" and just like that, Rita slinks out to brag about her conquest. Noooooooooo!!!

Oh! Oh! What's next? I guess you will just have to wait and see! But, I promise not to make you wait another six months this time!

Marvel Schools You on Hair Styles

This fashion filler page from My Love #9 (January 1971) is one of the only such pages I know of in the Marvel romance comics of the '70s. This page is unlike the original DC fashion pages in that the illustration is a conglomeration of images from previously published Marvel romance stories. Despite the eye-catching design, the brief copy, "For the man in your life-" doesn't come off as the most empowering message!

Malt Shops, and Drive-Ins, and Bowling Alleys! Oh, My! Typical Settings for Romance!

We all know that romance can happen anywhere -- but in the romance comics, love generally blossomed at a few select places. The following panels illustrate perhaps the most popular settings for 1960s and '70s romance stories. As you go through this post you may ask yourself, why no romance scenes in the bedroom? Bedroom scenes in the romance comics were few and far between and typically, reserved for married characters. Another thing to remember -- prior to the in-home entertainment revolution (e.g., devices such as VHS and DVD players) most amusements happened outside of the home, thus accounting for the public nature of the romantic venues shown here.

The stories of 1950s romance comics are great, but so are the filler pages! The four pages below hail from Romantic Marriage #6 (October 1951) published by Ziff-Davis. Collectively, the messages of the filler material do not really bode well for marriage -- especially these first two cartoon pages called "Wedding Belles." Click to read and see what I mean!

"Marriage Can Be Fun!" is definitely on the sunnier side and depicts marriage as an exciting and rewarding partnership. Very different from the previous two pages which just make the institution of marriage sound like a drag!

A Hunk, an Orange, and a Runaway Bride - "Perfect Match" from Girls' Love Stories #158 (April 1971)

Hello! This evening I have for you a story that is rather unusual for the romance comics. Most stories of love involved rather innocent displays of affection -- a goodnight kiss after a trip the soda fountain, a peck on the cheek, or at most, a visibly clothed tumble in the grass. Presumably all necessary depictions within the constraints of the original Comics Code and practical too, considering the varied demographics of readers -- some of who were quite young. "Perfect Match" hailing from Girls' Love Stories #158 (April 1971) is different. Read on to see what I mean!

As Louise prepares for her wedding day to Philip, she cannot get a man named Kirk out of her mind -- no matter how hard she tries.

How did Louise come to doubt her marriage to Philip, you ask? Well, it all started one day at the construction site of the couple's future home -- a gift from Philip's father. As the couple examines the property, a well-muscled stranger (Kirk) catches Louise's eye.

Yup... this guy.

Later that day, Louise visits with her mother who senses her misgivings about the impending marriage. She reminds Louise what a good and stable life Philip will give her. But security means little when the gorgeous stranger consumes Louise's thoughts as she lies in bed.

Despite feeling guilt over fantasizing over another man, Louise goes to visit the construction site the next day. Alone. She tells the hunky construction worker that she is afraid of heights and silently, he takes her by the hand. When he turns his back on her, she becomes enraged. However, the stranger's coolness towards her doesn't prevent Louise from taking comfort in her fantasy of the chiseled mystery man.

That evening while dining in a crowded restaurant, Kirk asks to join Philip and Louise due to lack of seating. Philip reads his menu while Kirk essentially undresses Louise with his eyes and the two press their knees together under the table.

Louise stuns herself when she realizes she has slipped out of her shoe to start a game of footsie with Kirk. She is momentarily stunned, but quickly becomes entranced by Kirk once more when he seductively (and a bit strangely) eats an orange. After dinner and after parting ways with Philip for the evening, Louise waits in the darkness for Kirk. When he shows up, the two passionately embrace... and embrace some more...

The two daring lovebirds continue to see each other right up until the wedding. As Louise makes her way out of her house for the church on the big day, Kirk appears. After a steamy kiss, Kirk picks Louise up and puts her in his car and drives off.

"I froze... melted... was burned by my
volcanic love..."

Thinking she has been kidnapped, Philip and Louise's father call the police. When the escapees are pulled over, the officer inquires as to Louise's compliance in the affair. Ascending from her past guilt over her infatuation with another man, Louise declares loud and clear that she loves Kirk and intends to marry him. As the two speed away, Louise's father is left in a state of bewilderment.

Interesting, no?! Between the images and the text, "Perfect Match" reads unlike most romance comic book stories from the '60s and '70s. Few are so blatantly sexy, mildly erotic, and full of potential euphemisms. Though the Comics Code had been loosened somewhat in early 1971, this story when read closely, still seems as though it just slid under the radar.

Happy Monday everyone! This is probably a short week for many of you with Thanksgiving rapidly approaching! I have some good stuff planned this week, so be sure to check back! And now... a little observation!

I personally, love the "Mad Mad Modes for Moderns" filler pages. I am especially fond of the one above as it displays not only some enviable outfits, but the subtle background design pulls the two pages together nicely. However, I have noticed with this series that I find myself concentrating on the artwork and ignoring the copy. After all, it is a little *ahem* cheesy if you will, and occasionally it borders on the nonsensical side. Interestingly, they also almost all contain multiple references to felines! Most utilized in the "Mad Mad Modes for Moderns" across the board seems to be the word "tiger." Today's example contains no less than eight references to the creatures belonging to the Family Felidae, including: tiger (mentioned three times), pussycat (used twice), cat, feline, and tomcats!

Usually when I read the romance comics I try to take both art and text into consideration when deciding my feelings on a story, but with "Mad Mad Modes for Moderns" I find it is best to just enjoy the art for what it is -- gorgeous fashion illustration!

Hey all! Above are two Wonder Woman house ads hailing from romance issues with 1963 cover dates. Last year I shared a few Wonder Woman ads from the late '60s and early '70s romance issues advertising the issues in which Wonder Woman renounced her powers and lived as Diana Prince. The above ads were published years earlier, but were similarly directed toward the romance comic audience. Though Wonder Woman was billed as a super-heroine, these ads sent the message to romance comic readers that she was still relatable and not immune to the hardships associated with love -- despite her super powers.

Celebrate Veterans Day with Career Girl Romances

Hello everyone! Happy Veterans Day! In celebration and appreciation of the many women and men who have served in and supported the armed forces over the years I present "Saigon Kisses" from Career Girl Romances #46 (August 1968). Our story starts with the departure of Tommy Suchak -- Green Beret and fiancé to Wendy Miller.

Sent to the jungles of Vietnam, Tommy writes frequently to Wendy. She always writes back and always dreams about him when her head hits the pillow. One night Wendy wakes up from a terrible nightmare. She fears the worst...

Wendy's nightmare becomes reality -- Tommy is announced missing in action. Wendy fears he is either a prisoner of the Viet Cong or dead. Tommy's parents tell her to continue to pray and not give up hope that he might still be alive. Weeks pass. Frustrated with waiting and not knowing, Wendy decides to take matters into her own hands by joining the Red Cross.

Before long, Wendy finds herself in Saigon. Her days are filled with visiting wounded soldiers, delivering packages from home, and meeting helicopters carrying freed American POWs. All the while, Wendy keeps alert to any signs of Tommy.

Not one to sit on the sidelines, Wendy does whatever she needs to do (including using her feminine wiles) to gain entry into combat zones in order to search for Tommy.

Just as she starts to lose hope that he is alive, a soldier comes in without dog tags, clinging to life. Amazingly, it is Tommy!

Back at the Red Cross station, Wendy sticks by Tommy's side while he regains his health. In a simple but happy ending, the two kiss.

Naturally, lots of romance stories were centered around wartime, but few featured such a proactive heroine and a happily ever after!

Because You Demanded It! Doormat for Love!

Hi friends! Friday's post of my favorite Nick Cardy covers was a big hit! A few of you actually inquired about the interior story depicted on the cover of Girls' Love Stories #148 (January 1970) and I couldn't resist sharing! The cover is indeed Cardy, but the actual story was penciled by Win Mortimer and appears to have been inked by Mortimer as well -- although, there do seem to be a few inconsistent and uncharacteristic panels. Anyhow!

Brace yourselves for "Doormat for Love!"

Though as you will see, a tad misleading!

"Doormat for Love!" is not a complicated story, but it is a good one. The splash page introduces us to fellow students, Trina and Hal. After a slightly awkward introduction, Hal asks Trina if she would care to grab a Coke. New to the dating game, Trina enthusiastically says yes.

Their date proves to be a bit of a disaster. After Hal asks Trina to go steady, she nervously spills her drink on Hal's shoe. To make matters worse, Trina gets down on the ground and cleans off his shoe with her hanky. The rest of the kids start laughing. Embarrassed, Hal grabs Trina to scram.

Once away from the scene, Hal pulls Trina in for a romantic kiss. The two continue to date for a few weeks, but Trina becomes increasingly accommodating and borders on obsessive in her quest to please Hal.

From knitting to baking to running out in the rain to grab refreshments for Hal, Trina puts his interests miles before her own. The last straw for Hal is when Trina agrees to see a Western film despite not being a fan of the genre. After the movie, Hal dumps Trina.

Trina is devastated. Assuming Joan (Trina's best friend) will back her up, Trina is surprised when Joan tells her she has been foolish for pampering Hal. Fuming, Trina decides to get back at Hal.

The next day at school, Trina acts aloof as she drops her books and walks through the doorway where they met -- announcing clearly, "Ladies first, sir!" Trina continues to act unaffected by Hal's presence for the remainder of the school day.

After school, Hal drops by Trina's house. He makes a quip about her having a cake set for him like she did last time. Trina fires back that she wouldn't bake him a cookie, much less a crumb. Her new attitude of independence pleases Hal. Obviously!

Though brunette Nan from the cover scene never makes an appearance, "Doormat for Love!" is a cute story with an admirable ending! Ahhhh! Romance comics!

Selling Romance - Zolatron Simulated Diamond Ring!

Before I left the United States, I received the following advertisement in some junk mail. Usually I would just throw those sorts of things away, but this one for the Diamond-x4 caught my eye -- I knew I had seen something very similar someplace before! And of course, where else... in a romance comic!

Fake diamonds are nothing new. Judging by the multitude of young readers who wrote in to the advice columns asking for help with their impending marriage plans, they were understandably sought after. I am sure quite a few of those young ladies wound up with Zolatron diamonds from their young suitors!

Charlton Gothic Romance Comic Story - "Sleep, My Love..." Haunted Love #6 (October 1974)

Happy Halloween, everyone! Since Friday's Gothic romance story was such a hit, I thought I would post another! For a Halloween evening treat, I present "Sleep, My Love..." from Charlton's Haunted Love #6 (October 1974). As per the splash page, the story was edited by George Wildman, written by Joe Gill, and rendered (cover as well) by Tom Sutton.

Our story takes place in Paris in 1906. The young and handsome Dr. Henri Duval has just set up practice and makes a house call to his first patient -- an elderly Madame Maleure who resides in a crumbling mansion. The resilient Madame is taken care of by a beautiful young woman, Madeleine Beauvois.

During his examination of the frail woman, the Madame requests that he send Madeleine out of the room so they can speak privately. While Madeleine fetches fresh water, Madame Maleure tells Henri that Madeleine is so stressed out over taking care of her that the young woman stays awake day and night. The doctor and the elderly woman come to the conclusion that a tonic laced with a sleeping potion will be best for Madeleine.

Henri checks in on his elderly patient twice a week. While there on a visit one day, he finally decides to ask Madeleine out for dinner which greatly pleases Madame Maleure. The two fall in love, which pleases the old woman even more.

While out with the doctor, the old woman sneaks into Madeleine's bedroom and pours an extra sleeping aid into the prescribed tonic. That night after sipping the medicine, Madeleine falls into a deep sleep. Taking advantage of Madeleine's vulnerable state, the old woman casts a spell on her and infiltrates her body -- transforming her into the young and beautiful Madeleine.

The old Madame wastes no time, and heads out into the Paris night. Just as dawn breaks, she heads back -- in time to leave Madeleine's waking body. When Madeleine wakes, she doesn't feel quite right... and rightfully so!

While serving Madame Maleure her breakfast that morning, Madeleine is noticeably exhausted. The old woman suggests that she take a swig of the tonic and take a nap after lunch. Madeleine heeds her advice and falls into another coma-like sleep, giving Madame Maleure another chance to inhabit the young woman's body. But this time, instead of strolling the streets of Paris alone, the Madame takes Madeleine's body out on a date with Henri -- the next step in her ultimate evil plan.

Suddenly, Madeleine awakens -- much to her surprise. The last thing she remembers was going down for a nap. Henri chalks the strange occurrence up to a bad reaction to the tonic and advises Madeleine to stop taking it.

That night, Madeleine forgoes the tonic as recommended. Madame Maleure obviously has a problem as she is unable to penetrate Madeleine's body for her own use. But the old witch isn't willing to give up...

"I've learned what I must do to remain eternally young...
if I can assume Madeleine's identity while she sleeps...
and if my own body dies while I possess her youth
I will be young again!

The next day during tea time, Madame Maleure pours a potion into Madeleine's drink to pursue her goal of eternal youth and beauty. The unsuspecting young woman falls asleep. But she is not the only one to rest... the Madame has given herself a lethal dosage so that her transformation may be achieved.

Feeling that Madeleine is in danger, Henri bursts on the scene. He attempts to save the old woman with all of his being.

Henri revives the old woman's body which causes the essence of Madeleine to assume her own youthful body once more. Henri explains to a baffled Madeleine that he had a feeling that evil was afoot. Together, the two young lovers leave the house of horrors and the devious witch inside... forever!

"To Wed the Devil" - The Sinister House of Secret Love #2 (December 1971/January 1972)

It's almost that time of year -- Halloween! Not too many spooky romance comic tales out there... unless you count the brief foray into the Gothic Romance subgenre by DC and Charlton in the '70s. I have one such story to share today! For your visual and reading pleasure, please enjoy "To Wed the Devil" -- a "Graphic Novel of Gothic Terror" from DC's The Sinister House of Secret Love #2 (December 1971/January 1972).

The dark and brooding cover features an inset painting by Jeffrey Catherine Jones (Jeff Jones),* with border art by interior story artist, Tony DeZuniga. The five chapter story was plotted by Joe Orlando and scripted by Len Wein.

We are introduced to Sarah, a beautiful (if not spoiled) young woman who resides with her wealthy father and their dutiful and witchy servant, Agatha.

One day while walking through their immense estate, Sarah and her beloved white cat -- Tabbeta, come across Agatha in the middle of a pentagram performing a spell. Sarah is furious at her blasphemy, but Agatha is quick to explain that she is casting a spell in hopes that it will improve Sarah's chances at love. Though Agatha says she views Sarah as the daughter she never had, Sarah does not share her feelings of kindred devotion.

When Sarah and Agatha return to the main level of the home, Sarah is pleased to see that her uncle -- Samuel, has come to visit. He however, is not pleased with her treatment of Agatha. Uncle Samuel as well as her father, feel that Sarah is far too harsh and judgmental of the old woman. Sarah feels that firing Agatha is the only way to rid their house of evil, but Sarah's father is not having any of it. It was Sarah's mother and his late wife's dying wish to keep Agatha employed in their home.

"There is something wrong here, dear Tabbeta --
A feeling that chills the very air! Deep in the shadows
that surround us, there is an evil afoot in this house!"

Fortunately for distraught Sarah, her beau Justin comes for a much needed visit. In a scene straight out of a regular ol' romance comic, Justin proposes. Sarah gives resounding approval to his request.

Deeply in love and quite ecstatic, Sarah and Justin go to announce their future plans to her father -- but he has other plans for Sarah's future. He explains to her that his investments have gone sour and that their fortune is completely gone. The only way he can make things right is to give Sarah's hand in marriage to an admiring Baron -- Luther Dumont, who will loan him the money he needs to get back on his feet. After hearing her father's pleas, Sarah agrees to marry the Baron, albeit tearfully. Understandably, Justin is furious when he learns the news and attacks Sarah's father, knocking him to the ground.

Without haste, Sarah is sent by carriage off to Bohemia to meet her new husband. She is accompanied on her journey by dutiful Tabbeta and witchy Agatha. Throughout the drive, Agatha is sure to remind Sarah that she has chosen the right path and that Justin was not the right mate for her. A part of Sarah starts to believe her. Suddenly, the carriage comes to a halt. Having lost a wheel, the driver gets out to inspect the damage. Out of darkness appears a band of thieves. In the ensuing scuffle, both the driver and Agatha are shot and left in the dust. Sarah makes a run for it, only to be halted by one of the aggressive highwaymen. Before he can assault Sarah any further, a mysterious pistol bearing man appears from the shadows.

The mysterious man carries Sarah and Tabbeta towards the Baron's lofty castle. Realizing her state of disarray, Sarah is horrified that she will have to meet her future husband looking like a "beggar come calling." Upon her arrival to the estate, the man gruffly instructs her to clean herself up for presentation.

Once Sarah is refreshed, an elderly manservant leads her to the library to be introduced to the Baron. Sarah pulls aside an ornate curtain and is shocked to find her rescuer inside of a pentagram. But, as fate would have it -- he is not only her rescuer... He is... the Baron!

And with that revelation, the Baron Luther Dumont draws his bride-to-be in his arms and (in a most exquisitely rendered page I must point out) bewitches her with his kiss. Sarah's past begins to drift away.

In what is the last chapter of the story, Sarah is abruptly shaken out of her dark and romantic dream world when she finds her treasured companion, Tabbeta dead. She feels it must be the work of evil and those feelings are confirmed when she is locked in her chambers. From behind a pillar emerges the frail manservant. He tells Sarah that he is there to help her escape. He instructs her to don dark garments and a veil to hide in the shadows. Sarah notices there is something distinctly matrimonial about the getaway disguise, but continues to dress as instructed.

The manservant leads Sarah down a dark staircase and through a passageway. Expecting to meet her freedom, Sarah is disturbed to see not the night air, but a gathering of darkly dressed figures. Before Sarah can utter words of revolt, the manservant reveals the awful truth! He is not a "he" after all, but Agatha! And Agatha at that moment isn't just the old woman whom Sarah was raised around, but the Baron Dumont's mother!

Sarah is quickly ushered to the alter to be married off to the sickening force of evil who momentarily captured her basest of emotions.

As the chanting commences, a familiar voice bursts from the darkness. Justin! He managed to track Sarah to her whereabouts -- and just in the nick of time too!

Justin succeeds in sending the Baron plunging to his death. The rest of the satanic tribe lunges on the two young lovers, but they manage to escape their grasp. As they run to leave the enormous structure, they are met by Sarah's uncle and his friend. Both men of faith -- they stand strong, holding up symbols to ward off the worshipers of evil.

Their faith is so strong in fact, that the house filled with evil explodes -- taking the worshipers (including old Agatha) as hell-bound captors.

And so, the epilogue tells us that Justin and Sarah were married -- just as they should have been in the first place. Sarah's father apologizes for the errors of his ways and all is forgiven. He is even offered help from local investors who learn that his finances had been tampered with by Agatha and the Baron for their own evil gain.

Despite her impending future as a working man's wife, and after all the craziness brought forth by her father, Agatha, and the Baron, Sarah is able to feel these words of hope...

"...Justin and I had our love, a power far greater
than any that wealth could attain. And somehow,
everything else seemed terribly unimportant
by comparison."

As a new bride, Sharon has big shoes to fill -- those of her new mother-in-law. Formerly a secretary in a law office, Sharon is determined to measure up to the home life husband Wally has been accustomed to his whole life.

As soon as they arrive at their new home in New York, Sharon gets to work on making their new apartment homey and organized. Wally is extremely pleased...

...so pleased in fact, that he goes so far as to brag about Sharon's homemaking skills to their new neighbors, Jane and Harry Jenson. Sharon is thrilled that Wally and Harry find her comparable to their mothers. Meanwhile, super fashionable Jane expresses her distaste for the domestic arts, which makes Sharon cringe.

"I felt very superior as Jane
displayed her irresponsibility as a housewife..."

Soon, the evening homemaking classes that Sharon attends take over all of her spare time, which frustrates Wally who wants to have fun as young newlyweds.

"But after slip covers there were bedspreads and cooking class
got more and more interesting. I was so absorbed in
my triumphs as a homemaker that I was totally unaware
of a growing restlessness in Wally."

The tension between Sharon and Wally builds. Finally one evening, Wally tries to get Sharon to stay home from class to watch a wrestling match on their new television set. Sharon dismisses Wally's request and goes to her home decoration class anyhow. When she gets home, Sharon is angered to see the Jensons on her couch -- more specifically, angered to see Wally enjoying Jane's company.

After Jane and Harry leave, Sharon and Wally get into a full blown fight that lasts into the evening. Sharon accuses Wally of having a thing for Jane, and Wally accuses Sharon of no longer being any fun (or "gay" as they used to say back then).

Things only get worse when Jane knocks on the door that evening claiming to be looking for Harry. Sharon assumes she has just caught her husband and Jane in the middle of a tryst. Wally tries to explain that Jane was innocently looking for Harry, but Sharon cannot be swayed. The next day, in an attempt to seek revenge, Sharon goes to the beauty parlor to get done up à la Jane and be purposefully late in getting dinner on the table. When Sharon arrives home to show off her new look and send the message to Wally that she can't do it all, she finds Wally and Jane in a compromising position on the couch.

Jane starts sobbing and runs out the door. Wally yells at Sharon for being cruel and Sharon yells at him for going along with Jane's seductive ways. Wally then retorts that it is not Jane who is the problem, it is Sharon! With her perfect homemaking, Sharon is in effect, the true home-wrecker. Wally was only comforting Jane after she got into a fight with her husband over her lack of skills as a housewife. Upset and confused, Sharon learns that Wally wants her to be more wife and less housekeeper. Fortunately, the neighbors patch things up and Jane and Sharon agree to both try to find balance by drawing from each other's positive attributes.

Personally, I really like this story -- not because I delight in seeing either woman suffer, but for all the historical insights that it exudes. "Out to Show Me Up" embodies the expectations and pressures inherent in trying to "do it all" for the mid-century woman culturally trained to be both content motherly housekeeper and doting sex-kitten. I hope this story got you thinking just as much as it did me!!!

Happy United Nations Day 2011!!! Believe it or not, I had more than one UN themed romance comic cover up my sleeve! When you think about it though, the UN isn't such a strange setting for a romance story considering the organization's importance and prestige after the Second World War. While in college, I completed a month long seminar at the United Nations and believe me, the General Assembly and Security Council Chamber are quite glamorous!!! With all that mid-century design it would be hard not to fall in love at the UN!

My First Visit to a Danish Comic Book Store!

Tucked away from the main shopping street in Aarhus, Denmark, down a little corridor of graffiti and ivy, is a small comic book shop bursting at the seams with comic book goodness -- Komics. I visited the store for the first time today to purchase bags, boards, and short boxes -- all of which I had to leave behind when I moved from the States a couple of months ago. Long story short, after much online research it became clear that purchasing the supplies from my semi-local comic book store would be more cost efficient than having them shipped. So this morning I hopped on a train and spent a nice afternoon chatting with owner, Kjeld about comics and what not! Here are a few pictures I snapped with my phone of the inside of Komics! Naturally, I forgot to take a picture of the outside sign... next time!

At some point in our conversation, the owner pulled out a copy of 1000 Comic Books You Must Read by Tony Isabella -- 1970s romance comic book editor and Sequential Crush reader! Small world, eh?!

Love (or lack thereof) in El Barrio - Young Romance's "The Wall Between Us"

This evening's story, "The Wall Between Us" from Young Romance #175 (October 1971) is a romance tale filled with rejection and confusion for leading lady, Ruth Hagan who works as a social worker in "El Barrio." In an effort to help the (in her eyes) downtrodden Ramirez family, Ruth takes a special interest in the family's handsome son, Carlos. Carlos, however, wants nothing to do with Ruth and her charitable ways.

In an effort to forget about Carlos and his disdain for her profession, Ruth calls up her boyfriend, Win, to hang out. While Win kisses her, all Ruth can think about is Carlos. Win senses her distance and inquires as to its source. She tries to brush it off as a problem with a "client," but Win knows that she is referring to Carlos -- he has obviously come up before in their conversations. Win makes his feelings about Carlos heard loud and clear when he says, "He's just like the rest -- they're lazy trouble-makers..." Ruth sticks up for Carlos and contends that he only needs to be given a chance.

In an effort to patch things up with Carlos, Ruth heads back to his neighborhood. She offers him some money as a "loan" -- worsening the situation.

It becomes apparent in a dream sequence that not only does Ruth want to help Carlos; she wants him to view her as worthy of his affection.

Not one to give up, Ruth attempts to make her dream a reality. The next day, she ambushes Carlos in his apartment lobby and declares her undying love for him. He basically tells her to scram, but she continues to go on and on that her love is there for the taking. Carlos has a different take on her declaration of adoration...

Carlos tells Ruth to get on with her life -- he has found work and he plans to move on with his. Ruth unenthusiastically goes back to Win who tries to make her forget about Carlos. But Ruth can't forget and when Carlos calls a few months later to invite her to a celebratory party, she jumps at the chance to see him again. Literally, she jumps on Carlos, and wraps her arms around him as she exalts, "Oh, Carlos! It's been so long! I knew you wouldn't forget me! Say you love me!" But Carlos doesn't love her -- still. He invited her to the party in hopes that she would help celebrate in his success. With a friendly peck on the cheek, Carlos leaves Ruth with the following advice:

"Hold out your hand to my people, Ruth.
That's all they ask, really. Goodbye -- and good luck!"

Confused and alone, Ruth stands on the stoop of the Ramirez family's building. Suddenly, Win drives up and offers not only a ride, but an explanation. It was he who gave Carlos a job in an effort to pull him away from Ruth. Only, Win wasn't expecting Carlos to excel and he also wasn't expecting to find himself realizing what a "bigoted fool" he had been.

And as a random officer of the law looks on, Win and Ruth reconnect and revel in the gift that Carlos Ramirez gave them -- the gift of love.

Though I appreciate "The Wall Between Us" and its attempt to include diversity and an admirable (and rare) Hispanic character, I am not sure about the story's effectiveness in conveying racial tensions of mid-century America. Carlos seems to be more of a catalyst for a convenient happy ending between Ruth and Win than a primary focus. Stories such as "Black + White = Heartbreak!" and "Full Hands - Empty Heart!" in my opinion, were more effective in eliciting the heart-wrenching emotions associated with love and loss. I would really like to hear your thoughts, though -- were you moved by "The Wall Between Us," or not so much? Please share!

Mad Mad Modes for Moderns Mondays - Imitation of Batman!!

I am always amazed by how wearable many of the fashions of "Mad Mad Modes for Moderns" tend to look. Though this Jay Scott Pike edition from Heart Throbs #111 (December 1966/January 1967) asks readers if they are "prepared to super-swing to the maddening pace of the sizzling sixties?" I would be more than happy to wear any of these ensembles in the 21st century!

Brad and Maria - From Different Sides of the Tracks in "Strangers in Love!"

I purchased this issue of Young Romance on Ebay last spring, primarily because the cover is just so cool! I just sort of assumed the corresponding interior story, "Strangers in Love!" would be an original '70s story. As it turns out, it is a retouched reprint (pencils by John Romita). Unfortunately, I do not have the original story, so I can't tell you if it is similar in plot or not. But, I just had to share this one not only for the groovy cover, but because it appears that leading lady Maria, and her family are Hispanic. Diverse characters (being few and far between in romance comics) are always exciting!

Maria decides to take a break from her urban life, and goes to visit her Aunt and Uncle. Though the change of scenery is nice, her extended family still lives on the "wrong side of the tracks." This fact comes to the forefront when Maria meets Brad, a handsome and wealthy local. The differences between them have no bearing on their attraction, and the two spend a lovely afternoon smooching and getting to know one another.

Brad takes Maria home to meet his elderly uncle Josh -- Brad's legal guardian since early childhood. Brad warns Maria that his uncle is intimidating, but nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, Uncle Josh's reaction to Maria does not help put her at ease in Brad's wealthy and unfamiliar surroundings, but Brad's goodnight kiss assures her all will work out for the best.

Giddy with love, Maria eagerly tells her aunt and uncle about her new found romance. Sadly, her relatives are just as uptight about the relationship as Brad's uncle.

Ignoring those around them, Brad and Maria continue to date and fall madly in love. Brad ultimately pops the question, to which Maria says "Yes." Uncle Josh gives a resounding "No." He has already arranged a future wife for Brad, and it isn't Maria. Uncle Josh goes on to tell Brad that if he chooses to go through with his marriage to Maria, he will be cut out of his will.

You may notice that in a few panels Maria was
mistakenly not recolored for this reprint -- Oops!

Seeing as Brad has lived a life of luxury and never had to work, he doubts his abilities to support Maria without his uncle's help. Ultimately, Brad decides to call the engagement off.

Devastated, Maria tries to forget about Brad, but she can't stop thinking about how it was prejudice that ripped them apart. Or was it? Did Brad just not love her enough?

Just as the swirling questions and doubts cloud her mind, Brad comes up to Maria and declares that he cannot live without her and that nothing matters -- except for their love. Maria knows that is all true, but she wonders if Brad can handle living a life that he is unaccustomed to.

In an unexpected turn of events, Uncle Josh's chauffeur comes to Maria's house and announces to Brad that his uncle has passed away. In a last act of compassion, Uncle Josh scribbled a note to Brad accepting the marriage. And just like that, Brad and Maria are given the Happily Ever After they so deserve!

Love between boy and girl from opposite sides of the tracks was a common theme in the romance comics. In "Strangers in Love!" Maria and Brad's geographical relation to one another is used not only to denote social class, but ethnicity as well. I am guessing that the original printing of this story involved just a class division between the characters and that Maria was added in the '70s for diversification. If and when I do find the original story, I will be sure to let you all know!

1972 Romance Comic Book Contest - "The Woman I Want To Be!" from DC's Falling in Love

Not only do I love the stories of the romance comics, I love the stuff in between the stories, including the contests that were held to engage with readers. The following pages are from a contest that was held in Falling in Love called, "The Woman I Want to Be." Readers were encouraged to write in about their future plans, hopes, and dreams for a chance to win $5.00 (equivalent to approximately $25 today).

The contest's first winner, 15 year old Alice Evans declared to the DC editorial staff and fellow readers, "I really feel that I could manage both a home life and a business career, and I want to grow up to be the kind of woman who does."

The final winner of "The Woman I Want to Be!" contest was a young lady named Frieda Margolin who shared that along with marrying a "fine man," her dreams included "...working hard in school to get good grades, so I can go on to a college with a good veterinary school. That way I'll earn money as a vet so I can get my own farm someday."

These letters are quite moving, no?! It is so cool that they are not only pages of text, but documents that give a view into the audience of conscientious young ladies who were reading romance comics in the '70s! Not only do I wonder if these young women achieved their goals, I have to wonder if DC held on to all their letters in their archives or if they were regarded as throw-away pieces of everyday business? Either way, I definitely feel lucky that we have these three responses to treasure!

Time Travel Tuesdays - "Rancho of Golden Dreams" Cowgirl Romances #2 (1950)

It's that time again, Time Travel Tuesday! Today's story, "Rancho of Golden Dreams" is from the Fiction House publication, Cowgirl Romances #2 (1950). It is currently National Hispanic Heritage Month, so this epic romance tale set in "Old California" is quite fitting. One of the few representations of Hispanics in romance comics, this story is less about leading lady Dolores and her search for romance and more about her quest to save her father's estate. The story (credited to Augustine Martinez) is a little intricate, so here it is in its entirety -- courtesy of the Digital Comic Museum!

My Chat With Jim Steranko on His Only Romance Comic Book Story - "My Heart Broke in Hollywood!"

While I was at the San Diego Comic-Con a couple months ago, I had the good fortune of meeting Jim Steranko. He was kind enough to divert his attention away from his convention duties and chat with me a bit about his only romance story, “My Heart Broke in Hollywood!” that was originally published in Our Love Story #5 (June 1970). Our meeting was happenstance, so naturally I was without a recording device. After we talked, I quickly ran off to scribble down some notes! So without further ado, the following narrative is what Steranko told me about his one and only romance story! The accompanying pages are the original color guide for the story!*

Initially, Steranko was asked to draw a Western story, but said that he wanted to do a romance story instead. He felt that so much of the romance comic book stories were done in the “Jay Scott Pike” style that he wanted to try something radically different, and unlike any other romance story anyone had ever seen!

After penciling and inking the Stan Lee plotted story, Steranko decided he would color it himself. Knowing his color choices were non-traditional for a romance story, he decided to wait to turn the pages in just before the 5pm deadline – by which time it would be too late to change anything! Steranko recollected that Marie Severin thought it was pretty wild, but ultimately let the story pass through as he intended.

Steranko went on to tell me that when Our Love Story #5 appeared on the newsstands, Carmine Infantino apparently called a meeting with his staff over at DC. As Infantino chomped on his trademark cigar, he passed out ten copies of the rival Marvel romance. He instructed his staff to open up to Steranko’s “My Heart Broke in Hollywood!” and exclaimed, “Top this next month or you're fired!”

And that, my friends is the story that Steranko told me! Unfortunately as I said, I didn’t have anything to record this discussion with since it occurred spur of the moment. But sometimes, those encounters are the best and elicit the most genuine of stories! It was clear from his enthusiasm that Steranko not only enjoyed telling me about his sole romance story, but that he had a great time creating it!

Learning from Romance Comics - Margrete Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden - "A Woman to Remember"

A Classic Tale of Unrequited Love... Almost!

Every so often I come across a romance story that is a little on the bizarre side, and I just have to share! This edition of the semi-regular feature "Sweet Mystery of Love" was penciled by Tony Abruzzo and appeared in Girls' Love Stories #136 (July 1968). Contrary to what may seem like a pattern in romance comics, not all stories were about instantaneous attraction!

Janice's first mistake was agreeing to be set up on a blind date by her friend Cara with a guy named Freddy. Freddy is immediately enamored by Janice and she in turn, is completely repulsed!

After an uncomfortable evening and an awkward attempt at a kiss, Freddy professes his love for Janice. As he promises to call, she just shirks and vows to let her friend Cara know exactly how miserable the date was for her.

The next day Janice calls Cara up and reprimands her for arranging such a mismatch. Cara apologizes and suggests that she just refuse Freddy's offers to go out again. As you will see, that plan proves to be a situation that is easier said than done!

Freddy ignores (or doesn't get) Janice's attempts to get rid of him. Not only does he continue to call her, but starts showing up at her work...

...and even on her dates with other guys!

The situation becomes too much to bear, and Janice finally decides that she must confront Freddy directly and firmly. She tells him that he is not her type, and that he is wasting his time and needs to move on. Freddy calmly asserts that his love for her is unwavering, and that he will continue to be there for her until she changes her mind and embraces his love, or marries someone else -- whichever comes first.

Janice goes to the big dance with George. Having told him about the situation with Freddy, he is impressed that her talk with "Old Faithful" seems to have done the trick. As for Janice, she starts to get a little fidgety when Freddy doesn't make an appearance at the dance.

That night after the dance, Janice finds herself unable to shake thoughts of Freddy and his whereabouts. The next morning, the phone rings and Cara delivers some news -- Freddy was hit by a car just prior to the dance.

Janice quickly heads the hospital and while at Freddy's bedside, admits her realization of love for him. It seems that his absence, made her heart grow fonder.

In a way, this "Sweet Mystery of Love" is a classic tale of wanting what you can't have. In another light, it could be interpreted as a story about a young woman merely falling for her stalker. Perhaps Freddy just came on too strong and Janice wanted the thrill of the chase? What do you think? Sweet or scary?

Romance Comics Are All Over the Place!

A lot has been going on in
the world of romance comics lately...

Just yesterday, Erin Jameson's Lovefool column over at PLAYBACK:stl featured a critical review of the 2007 Marvel Romance Redux series. Erin does a nice job of laying out where exactly the concept went wrong and calls for the romance comics to be treated with "sincerity." I couldn't agree more.

Many of you probably already know, but this news is definitely worth repeating. In February, DC will be releasing Showcase Presents: Young Love Volume 1! Yay! It is currently available for pre-order at Amazon. Will you be picking it up?

Though the Showcase romance comics will be in black and white, the upcoming Fantagraphics book, Young Romance: The Best of Simon & Kirby's 1940s-50s Romance Comics will be in full glorious color! Head over here for a preview of the book by editor, Michel Gagne! So excited for this one!

Hello everyone! I hope you had a great weekend! As some of you probably already know, I am uprooting and moving from the United States to Denmark -- this month! While I am super excited, I am also naturally a bit stressed out! Making a move to another country is no easy feat! In light of my relocation, I have decided to go on a short hiatus from Sequential Crush. I will be back early September when my comics have arrived and a new scanner has been purchased! Until then, I hope you enjoy perusing through the archives of all the gems posted over the last few years and reading some of the other terrific blogs I have listed on my blogroll! I also encourage you to check in from time to time on my Twitter feed, as well as my new personal blog -- The Coziness Project which I will probably update a few times during the moving process. Back From Comic-Con!

Hello friends! It has been a while! As of late, I have been busy, busy, busy! Besides getting ready to move next month, I attended Comic-Con International in San Diego this past weekend! It was a great time, so I thought I would share a few highlights!

I arrived in beautiful San Diego Thursday afternoon and headed straight to the convention center. Before heading out there I made up my mind to not purchase anything due to my impending move. So, I slipped by the dealer area (which is usually where I spend most of my time at conventions) and started the day off with the spotlight on Roy Thomas panel. The session was very informative and I finally got to meet Roy with whom I had worked on Alter Ego #102 (June 2011) with! He was just as nice as I had anticipated!

The rest of Thursday I walked around the exhibition hall and said hello to old friends in Artists' Alley. I also stumbled upon some amazing original romance art over at the Romitaman Original Art booth. I fell in love with the following Abel and Flessel pieces, but stuck to my guns on not purchasing anything. Discipline!

Friday was another eventful day! The first panel I went to was the tribute to Gene Colan. I only met him once, so it was great to hear about him from his colleagues over the years. Marv Wolfman mentioned Gene's affinity for old movies a few times during the panel -- a point which I think really resonates in Colan's romance work. Overall, the panel was a fitting way to say goodbye to the recently departed industry great.

My second day in San Diego flew by and evening brought the event for which I made the trip out to San Diego in the first place -- the Eisner Awards! My grandfather, Mart Nodell was inducted into the Hall of Fame and I was there to help represent! There was a lovely dinner beforehand and my Dad and I were seated at a table with Jerry Robinson and his family, as well as the very talented Ramona Fradon. It was a fun evening and I was very proud to help accept the award on behalf of our family!

Saturday morning I had breakfast with Michelle Nolan, author of Love on the Racks: A History of American Romance Comics and collector, Dan Stevenson. The three of us had a nice chat and of course talked quite a bit about romance comics!

This was the first time in a looonnnggg time I had attended the San Diego convention without Justin. It was kind of sad, but I definitely felt his presence! LEGO had a huge representation at the con, and I even had the chance to say hello to a few of his colleagues. I also spotted Justin's 2009 comic book Super Human Resources at the Ape Entertainment booth, which was super exciting. He was missed!!!

The excitement continued on Saturday when I met Jim Steranko for the first time. Naturally, I had to gush over his only romance story, "My Heart Broke in Hollywood!" that appeared in Our Love Story #5 (June 1970). He was kind enough to tell me the story of its inception -- which I think I will save for another post -- stay tuned! He was so nice to talk to me for so long and I only regret that I didn't have a recording device on me!

Before I knew it, Sunday arrived -- the last day of the convention! After a short meeting with other women comic book scholars, I headed back out onto the exhibition floor. I "accidentally" made my way over to the dealer area and well... you can probably guess what happened next! Yup, I bought a few romance comics! I just couldn't help myself!

And just like that, Comic-Con International 2011 was over! I had a great time and I am very thankful that I was able to attend this year! I hope you enjoyed my little recap!!!

Cindy the Salesgirl - Too Mod for Her Own Good!

The adventures of Cindy the Salesgirl are some of the few multi-page non-serial story arcs with a recurring character in the romance comics of the '60s and '70s. If you aren't familiar with her, Cindy is a cute shop girl who has to deal with crazy customers on a regular basis -- hilarity frequently ensues. Today's episode from Falling in Love #104 (January 1969) penciled by Win Mortimer, has Cindy helping a customer named Sue who insists on finding an outfit that isn't "too mod."

You see, the guy Sue digs is a total square! Sue wants Cindy's help in picking something out to wear to the dance that her date wont find offensive.

Sue thinks all of Cindy's clothes are too far out and decides to look elsewhere. But when Sue shows up at the dance on Saturday night, her outfit is far more nutty and off the wall than anyone could have anticipated! POW indeed!

with a bit of storyline, don't ya think?

Now for a few things on a more personal note! As many of you probably already know, I have been anticipating a move overseas to Denmark for quite some time. My paperwork has finally gone through and I am leaving on August 21st! Whoooohoooo! I am super excited, but naturally a wee bit stressed out as well! Some of you have asked about the fate of Sequential Crush. No fear! Sequential Crush is here to stay!

I do have a lot of logistical things to sort out in a short time -- personally, as well as with figuring out how to physically move my massive romance comic book collection to another continent on a tight budget. So, I ask that you just bear with me! I am going to take all next week off to start packing and also, head to San Diego for the big comicon! I anticipate that my posts here on Sequential Crush will be less frequent until I am a bit more settled in my new home, but I will still try to post on a semi-regular basis! As always, you can find me on twitter!

1970s African-American Romance Comic Book Story + History Detectives Reminder!

My History Detectives segment airs tonight on PBS at 8pm EST/7pm CT! Since it is about the 1950 comic book Negro Romance, I thought I would post today on a 1970s story depicting African-American characters. This one is called "Make-Believe Romance" and is from Girls' Love Stories #169 (May 1972). The Grand Comics Database has it listed as being a retitled reprint, penciled and inked by Vince Colletta with retouched hairstyles to provide diversity. A very likely scenario, but at this time I do not know exactly where the story may have originally appeared or what it originally looked like. Until that little mystery is solved, enjoy the 1970s version!!!

Rumors constantly fly around the office. Gary and Lucy are in love! In actuality, Gary Walker is Lucy Weston's handsome boss, and there is not an ounce of romance between them... or so they think!

Lucy and Gary try hard to ignore the whispers heard 'round the water-cooler that they are an item. Everyone believes it to be so, except for Gary and Lucy! Frequently the two discuss the hassling they endure by fellow office mates.

The two distinctly not lovebirds come to the conclusion that it is probably their fault that everyone thinks they are an item. But, despite the fact they are always in the company of one another during work hours, they maintain that they are just really good friends.

However, whenever Lucy goes out on dates, she ends up wishing the guy was as compatible with her as Gary. And when she comes home from her dates, she dreams that someday she will find a man like Gary.

The gossip at work progressively worsens. Gary and Lucy decide to not even to fight it anymore as it would be futile. Lucy consults with her best friend, who also has her doubts about Lucy and Gary's platonic relationship.

One day while at work, Lucy is invited to the charity ball by the head manager. She agrees to go, gets gussied up, and is hopeful she will meet someone. Lo and behold! Who does she notice from across the room? Why, Gary of course! Out of the office and away from all the pressure, the two quickly see each other in a new light.

What a relief it must have been for them -- and for their nosy co-workers! I hope you enjoyed, and if you have time this evening be sure to catch me on the History Detectives!

Because You Demanded It! Too Spoiled for Love!

After this post back in October, many of you have requested that I feature this intriguingly titled tale from Girls' Love Stories #154 (October 1970). With a title like "Too Spoiled for Love!" -- how could I resist?!

Lila is what you would call a playa. She dates a bunch of guys and then ditches them the second it starts to get serious.

She is cool with her lifestyle, but her parents are not. They remind her that most of her friends are either engaged or married, and some even have children. Methinks they may partially just want her out of the house! Anyhow, one evening while headed out to a club, Lila's car stalls. A handsome guy stops to help her out.

The car is in need of major work and the young man named Brett tells Lila she will have to get it towed in the morning. Brett offers Lila a ride to her destination and she accepts, but also, invites Brett to join her at The Cave to see a band called Ghostly Happenings. Groovy!

Things are different with Brett. Lila is completely smitten and has no urge to move onto the next guy. She is even given the chance to meet someone new when her dad announces that he has invited his young assistant to have dinner at their house. Lila tells Brett that she will be unable to make their second date due to her father's arrangements. Brett lets Lila know it isn't an issue... and no wonder -- Brett turns out to be her father's new assistant!

Lila's father aggressively tries to "sell" Brett on her, not knowing they already met. Once given a chance to talk in private, Lila bursts out in anger at Brett. Though he explains that their meeting on the road the night before was purely accidental, she is convinced that he helped her just to get ahead at work. She chases him out with words of resentment and while he declares his love for her she thinks to herself,

"Why? Why you, Brett? Wasn't it cruel
enough that you'd made a fool of me? Did you have
to make me fall in love with you, too?"

Attempting to ease back to her normal playgirl lifestyle, Lila is unsuccessful and can only think about Brett. She decides the best course of action is to stop running away from him and saturate her life with all things Brett until she is completely sick of him. To accomplish this, Lila asks her father if she can work at the plant where Brett acts as floor supervisor.

Lila heads to work on the assembly line. Consumed by how "dull" the job is and Brett's overwhelming presence, she looses track of the settings on the pressure gauges. All of a sudden, an explosion occurs, injuring some of the women on the line. Horrified at the chaos caused by her own negligence and brattiness, Lila splits the scene and wanders the factory. Her father catches up with her and lets her know that Brett admitted to forgetting to do the morning gauge inspection -- resulting in him being fired.

Realizing that Brett only took the blame for her actions because he really loves her, Lila goes to stop Brett from leaving. Their flame is quickly reignited and as ol' Shakespeare espoused, all's well that ends well!

Time Travel Tuesdays - Miss America Romance Comic Featurette by Mart Nodell!

Today's Time Travel post is a very special one! June has been a big month for the Green Lantern! Even though the film didn't perform as well as expected and DC decided to go with the story of Hal Jordan, the hoopla surrounding the movie still made me really proud of my grandfather -- the creator of the original Golden Age Green Lantern!

Not only did my grandfather draw superhero comics, he dabbled in other comic book genres, including romance! The following little featurette "Charm Corner" is from Miss America v7#33 [66] (April 1950), an issue in which he also served as Art Associate.

Fab! Tuff! Outasight! - Monkees Mania in Romance Comics!

Hello, romance comic fans! When I was a kid and dragged to comic book conventions, I quickly learned that having a niche thing to collect made the cons ten thousand times more fun. At 12 years old, I wasn't super into collecting comics (yet), but I had been recently captivated by the Monkees and oh goodness, was I obsessed! And so, the comic book conventions I attended with my family turned into all out Monkees memorabilia hunts. I still really dig the Monkees and I am of course a wee bit sad I won't be seeing any of their latest tour performances.

Anyhow, how does this relate to romance comics, you ask? Well, there are quite a few advertisements for Monkees merchandise in the romance comics. Quite fitting when you think about it!

In the DC advice column "To You... from Carol Andrews" from Falling in Love #95 (November 1967), Carol advises readers on a new teen mag from DC called Teen Beat. The inaugural issue featured a sensationalistic story on the Monkees!

The second issue of Teen Beat was reincarnated as Teen Beam. This house ad for Teen Beam advertising frameable Monkees pictures was printed in Young Love #66 (March/April 1968).

Charlton published a magazine called Teen Tunes and Pin-Ups and naturally, advertised it in their romance comics. This ad featuring Micky, Davy, Mike, Peter and compatriots appeared in Teen Confessions #48 (January 1968).

Space in some of DC romance comics were purchased by Charlton to advertise their "huge kissable - SINGABLE - posters" of the Monkees. This one appeared on the back cover of Girls' Romances #130 (January 1968).

The Beatles made a few appearances in the stories and covers of romance comics, but besides these advertisements, I don't think any story in romance comics mentioned the Monkees. *Sob!*

Rest in Peace, Gene Colan - Romance Comic Book Artist Extraordinaire

Sad news struck the comic book industry early this morning -- Gene Colan has passed away. Primarily known for his work on Daredevil, Howard the Duck and Tomb of Dracula, Gene was also a prolific romance artist. Gene had been on my mind lately and I think that is why I posted a "Reach for Happiness!" episode just the other day. He had been ill for quite some time, so while not completely unexpected, his death is nonetheless a time for reflection. Below, are a few images which I feel eloquently capture Colan's distinct 1960s and '70s romance work for DC and Marvel.

Long Running Romance Comic Book Serial "Reach for Happiness!"- Episode Four

Last time we visited with the Danville Corners gang, nightclub owner Ray Silva paid a visit to Rita Phillips and the love triangle between Rita, blonde beauty Karen Wilder Sommers, and Dr. Greg Marsh became more evident. In this fourth episode from Secret Hearts #113 (July 1966) Gene Colan once again takes us through "The day-by-day story of real people trapped in a whirlpool of life and death, love and hate, laughter and tears..."

After Greg bails on Lila and Roger's party, Karen is left to ponder the situations of those around her. She is most concerned about her sour sister, Peggy. Lila explains that she is so bitter because she hasn't found love. Karen worries that she may be in for the same fate if she doesn't find love herself.

The sisters leave the party for the evening and make a stop at the Crystal Club for a drink before heading home. While there, Peggy spots none other than Rita and Greg enjoying a romantic evening together. Naturally, Karen wants to split.

Meanwhile, Lila and Roger's teenage son, Richie is out cruising with his girlfriend in his grandfather's Rolls Royce. When challenged to a drag race by a passerby, Richie can't resist. After a bit, Ritchie spins out of control and crashes. Unhurt, he is still in trouble and detained by the police. When Roger and Lila are called with the news, Roger decides to let him sit in jail for the night. The news of the accident is relayed to Ritchie's grandfather who was at Ray Silva's nightclub. The grandfather goes to bail Ritchie out and requests that Dr. Greg Marsh is sent to Lila and Roger's house to inspect Ritchie. Karen and Peggy are called and made aware of the accident.

Karen decides to head over to the house. Fortuitously, Greg is over there as well and when the grandfather asks Greg to check on Richie's girlfriend at the hospital, Karen tags along at Greg's request. During the quiet car ride, Karen longs for Greg to tell her he still loves her. He doesn't say the words, but he draws her close for a passionate kiss.

After the kiss, Greg goes into the hospital to check on Richie's girlfriend. When he comes back to the car, Karen expects they will pick up where they left off, but Greg just drives her home in silence and only musters out "See you, Karen." And so, Karen is left to ponder their future.
